This is literally the first time I’ve ever seen this in my life and I’m 39 wtf

u/widieiei28e88fifk 11d ago

I saw it first time this or last year too and I'm 32.

First Rottweiler with a tail just a couple of years ago.

Really sad, wasn't that long ago I learned about it. Just shows how common it is.

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

Depends where you live. Docking and cropping hasn’t been legal here in Aus in decades, and I believe it’s the same in a lot of Europe.

You also can’t declaw cats.

412

u/Zinkerst 11d ago

German here, ear-cropping has been illegal here since 1986, tail-docking followed 12 years later. Since 2001 dogs who have been cropped or docked can't compete or be displayed in shows. It's unbelievable to me (though sadly true) that in the US the Kennel Club enforces the opposite, not only promoting these cruel practices, but practically forcing breeders of certain breeds to crop puppies. I could never disfigure a puppy I raised and love like that.

99

u/I_Makes_tuff 11d ago

Yay, Germany!

215

u/Longjumping-Pay-9804 11d ago

To be fair, FUCK the Kennel club. All dogs are awesome. All dogs need love.

Edit: Living beings are not hobbies, you pieces of shit.

137

u/VapeThisBro 11d ago

Also fuck how they have deformed dogs for the sake of it being cute. Most modern dogs are a pale comparison to how they looked even a hundred years ago. Doesn't matter what breed whether it be German Shepards to french bull dogs to chow chows. And the thing is, people think the more fucked up form is better looking, regardless of the animal health. Like a dog breed should not be required to have surgery if you want it to breathe

20

u/CivilAirline 11d ago

Completely agree with your edit, many dogs out there that need love.

Declawing cats is definitely illegal in my state. Don't know about elsewhere in the US though.

307

u/ShpongleLaand 11d ago

If people can't risk their carpets and couches getting scratched then they shouldn't get cats.

There's ways around it too like claw caps or scratching posts. Also certain couches are really good at not getting damaged from pets. The upholstery on my couch has no marks despite 3 years of cats climbing it.

268

u/HumanDrinkingTea 11d ago Gold

Yep I have cats and some scratching posts and a regular trim is what we do. Now and then they scratch something they're not supposed to but cats will be cats and I care about them more than I do my furniture.

62

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter 11d ago

It's simple: just wait till one couch is completely ruined and then replace the whole thing with a new with fabric they don't scratch that costs significantly more 🥲

27

u/packersfan823 11d ago

At the end of it all, they're only doing what is in their nature. I think it's silly to get mad at an animal doing what's natural to them.

44

u/SprueKit 11d ago

This really. My cats shred basically everything ... they're more important. I just work super duper hard to keep them well the hell away from anything electrical and we can all sleep nice and cozy together.

That is ... until their screams wake me to tend to the firebox at 3am ... because unfortunately the first use of cats inside the actual home was firebox reporting as they freak out on reflex if their cozy heat source gets even a bit too low.

70

u/facesintrees 11d ago

My cat was robbed of her claws as a baby, I adopted her as a 5 year old from a shelter. Sure she doesn't claw couches, but she also has no balance, she can't climb or jump onto things, she has an ottoman to get on my bed. She doesn't always land on her feet, and she bites instead of clawing. It affects the cat in so many ways, it's barbaric that people still do it.

I have rabbits not cats, and dealing with nearly every object they can get to having an exploratory bite on it is just a part of accepting what they do, learning from it, and loving them anyways.

What is this magic upholstery and where do I find it!?

16

u/ShpongleLaand 11d ago

If I find out I'll be sure to reply. It's like a really tough suede.

20

u/libyav 11d ago

Microfibre. The only fabric I’ve found that foils their little murder mittens.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/HawkspurReturns 11d ago

When I got new sofas, I took the sample fabric home and dragged it around as a cat toy to see what would withstand their claws best. A very tightly woven fabric with finer threads held up well, and showed no damage after two cats did what they wanted to the sofas for 20 years.

7

u/ManlyPoop 11d ago

It's like corduroy

7

u/I_Makes_tuff 11d ago

Be careful. It depends on your pets. Mine destroyed a leather couch and don't bother a fabric one.

It’s illegal in New York and Maryland plus a handful of cities, many of which are in California.

A lot fewer vets will do declawing now than 2 decades ago, even in places where it’s legal.

67

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

I still read about it on the cats subreddit, so I assume some places must be still doing it?

I’m glad to hear that it’s illegal where you are.

You know, I’m not sure if it’s ever been legal here in Aus. I’d never even heard of it until being much older and hearing about it as something happening in the US, and I’ve never seen a declawed cat. I’m 50.

35

u/penguindude24 11d ago edited 11d ago

It's legal in a lot of US states, but almost every veterinarian under 60 years old will caution you away from performing it on your pet almost nation wide. I didn't declaw my cat, nor was I ever going to, but I've talked with my vets office about it and they say they actively advise clients not to. I imagine that's common.

16

u/I_Makes_tuff 11d ago

I'm in Washington and my vet is the same way. I had no desire to declaw mine but the vet still made it pretty clear how horrible it is for the cats. This was like 15 years ago.

15

u/LilAnge63 11d ago

I’m Aussie too, although I’m 60 and I have never heard of or seen a declawed cat here, thank goodness! I was outraged when I heard that declawing was a thing! How could anyone do that to any animal! I’ve always felt that about dogs too! The things some people do animals is absolutely disgusting! If you don’t like the animal the way it is made by nature then don’t buy it and DON’T breed it!!

8

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

Yes, I 110% agree! People suck.

9

u/MittensSlowpaw 11d ago

Still legal in some places. I have a rescue kitty that was found lost covered in fleas and declawed. She lives with me now though and is full of love!

Our poor kitty had her claws removed at a shelter in Iowa, before she ended up at the shelter we found her in. She’s still traumatized, nervous around people, and hates being picked up. We sedate her to go to the vet and she still freaks out.

But she’s getting better! Now she’s friends with our orange tabby girl and can be picked up for 5-10 seconds.

North America is backwards in a lot of ways and this is one of them

34

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

I’m sure we all have our backwards stuff, but, yes, I’m horrified that it’s legal anywhere.

People talk about injuries and stuff, but we seem to do just fine here.

20

u/Gantz-man91 11d ago

The injuries they talk about only come if the dog is a guard dog or fighting dog. Mostly dog fighting. Which is also illegal. So there's no reason they need their body altered at all. A guard dog can have his ears and tail. Military dogs have theirs.

Humans do such heinous things to animals I swear

9

u/Lucifang 11d ago

Yep anyone who uses ‘working dogs’ as an excuse is full of shit. I’ve never seen a hunting dog with cropped ears and tail. Never seen sheep dogs or cattle dogs or police dogs cropped.

It’s 100% just to make the dog look ‘tough’ but all it does is make the owner look like a wanker.

Europe as well or are least the Netherlands, even though it still happens that dogs get their ears clipped and tails couped it is illegal unless it's for a medical reason, declawing cats has always been illegal here.

4

u/GAZZAA42 11d ago

Same here no docking or cropping in NewZealand, not too sure about cat declawing. Also debarking is a no no. Doberman looks quite good though 👌

6

u/eclipsed_oracle 11d ago

I’m glad declawing cats is illegal in at least some places. It’s fucking awful

7

u/AnonymousOkapi 11d ago

Uk: docking and cropping is illegal except for certain working breeds, and it is fairly tightly regulated around those. Ive had a couple of people request I dock 8-10 week old spaniel puppies (ie. just after they got them) and nope, sorry you're out of luck, has to be done by a week old. I feel its getting less common for the working breeds as well. The reason is to prevent broken tails when they're plunging through foliage, but that happens less often than people thought and you can fix it by tail amputation as and when it happens. Its been completely illegal for aethetics only for quite some time.

3

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

We don’t even dock working dogs. It’s a lot less of an issue than you’d think.

4

u/AnonymousOkapi 11d ago

Yeah - I'm a vet and personally it's not a service I offer. I think the rate of injuries are low enough its not justified. The law still provides for it though as it is considered a valid reason.

20

u/wildtaylorberry 11d ago

I worked at a vet where they did the docking of tails and ears. It was so horrifying how the tail docking happened. There are way more dog breeds that get tails docked as puppies than there are ear crops. They would only do the tails within like 36 hours of birth because something about nerves being fully grounded or something. Like the pain wasn’t fully registered. Was present when a little of 9 Australian Shepard puppies were brought it. No anesthesia or anything. They just took them to the back and cut/twisted the tails off. I don’t care if the pain doesn’t last. The puppies were crying and screaming and I’m so glad I eventually transferred to a clinic that refused any cosmetic or aesthetic surgeries for animals.

21

u/[deleted] 11d ago

My rottie has a tail! She loves whacking the shit out of my kneecaps, but I'm still glad she has it

21

u/SpookyScarySteph 11d ago

Mine has hers too. When she was younger she used to chase her tail in circles for HOURS. My friends and I used to joke that that's why Rotties have their tales docked, so they can focus on life outside of the tail. She eventually grew out of the tail chasing, now she just turns into a donut and spins when she's excited.

u/Weltallgaia 11d ago

8

u/The_Cutest_Kittykat 11d ago

Ditto. I'm 54yo. Never even thought about the tail being docked but its obvious now. But I still can't quite fathom that the ubiquitous pointy ears are a result of cropping.

4

u/upstatedreaming3816 11d ago

I knew a rotty with a tail when I was in high school. He was the biggest, derpiest, tail waggingest thing and let me tell you, there were times when we wished his tail was docked. Thing was damn near a lethal weapon. Getting hit in the nads with a rotty tail hurts just as bad as when your buddy sack taps you 😂

I haven't seen the tail, but I had a Doberman with floppy ears when I was a kid. We got him from a shelter when he was 4-5 years old. He was so smart and gentle and sweet, though he did have a protective streak (only ever saw it when my siblings play-fought each other and he didn't know which one to protect, lol). The floppy ears are so soft and just adorable.

34

u/Ycx48raQk59F 11d ago

When i was a kid the pastor in my village had a doberman like that. She was a total lapdog, and i remember vividly that kid me was playing with her ears for hours because they were so velvet soft.

68

u/baking_chemist 11d ago

I'm older than that and it's a first for me. Good lord they are adorable! I was always scared of them because a "standard" Doberman charged me when I was a kid. But this looks like a dog who just wants to play!

This is bullshit someone made up to continue docking. From Wikipedia:

While some outlying Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born with their tail naturally short, the majority often have their tails docked between 2–5 days old due to historical tradition or to conform to the Breed Standard.

Most corgis have normal tails -- including Pembrokes. We lop them off. It needs to stop.

→ More replies (3)

25

u/Awomdy 11d ago

I was going to say this. Many corgi lineages are tailless. If they weren't, all the corgis in places like Australia and most of Europe would have them since its illegal to dock.

22

u/I_saw_the_movie 11d ago

All corgis in Australia do have tails. The natural bob tail is extremely rare.

10

u/Awomdy 11d ago

I just checked professor google and I stand corrected. I've only ever known people with wigglebutt corgis, so I assumed and you know how that saying goes...

They’re super cute in their natural state. That’s why they cut their ears, cause without the procedure – they look like giant puppies… which they are.

902

u/TexanInExile 12d ago

Great Danes too. We didn't crop our dog's ears and they looked so goofy, which matched their personality

317

u/Adamtess 11d ago

Our Dane is just an overgrown puppy clown, funniest dog. Easily the most gentle and we owned bichons prior to this

51

u/ShpongleLaand 11d ago

I love big dogs that act like little dogs. A childhood friend of mine had a gigantic French mastiff named otis who was like over 120lbs. He always wanted to lay on me while I was on the couch, one time i woke up and he was laying on me length wise with his jowls draped over my face and I could barely breathe.

Honestly I’ve never seen a dog with cropped ears other than on the internet, is this just some deranged fashion in America or is it weird that we don’t do it in the UK?

127

u/RissaCrochets 11d ago

It's not weird you don't do it, it's a mercy. It's a completely unnecessary cosmetic surgery to make the dogs conform to breed standards. Outside of medical reasons there are no justifiable reason to dock a dog's tail or ears, it's just mutilation.

30

u/DemonDuckOfDoom666 11d ago

I understand that, I meant is this common everywhere or just in America because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video of a dog with cropped ears when the owner didn’t have an American accent.

42

u/jobthrowwwayy1743 11d ago

There are definitely places other than america where people will preemptively dock the tail of a working dog (herding, hunting dogs, police/military dogs, etc) to prevent it from getting injured or caught on things. Some places where docking is illegal have an exemption for working dogs. But I’m not sure there’s great evidence working dogs actually injure their tails often enough that we should be cutting all of them off, it seems like overkill tbh

38

u/ShuttlecockShshKebob 11d ago

We had a dalmatian & we didn't dock his tail & he smacked it on everything. It was like a whip & it was constantly bleeding from it being unconsciously smacked on walls, etc. It's called a "happy tail" & they sell vet tape (essentially athletic tape) to keep it covered. I love the name, but I'm afraid that if any crime is ever committed in this house, the luminol blood splatter spray will light up every wall under 3 feet tall.

Also, RIP Dommy, he was just a "big dumb goofy dog," but we loved him for 12 years!! (He's been gone a good amount of time, but damn he was a good old boy)

15

u/OmegianLord 11d ago

My mum has a Great Dane x Irish Wolfhound. He’s the easily the biggest, meanest looking dog in our house but he’s the friendliest goofball.

It’s the little border collie you have to look out for. Her nickname is raptor because she stalks you and hides in the garden to jump out like the Clever Girl raptor from Jurassic Park.

21

u/Winter-Plankton-6361 11d ago

Great Dane x Irish Wolfhound

Good grief, how does it fit in your house???

19

u/Aetra 11d ago

His nickname is actually dumb-horse because he isn’t very bright and we thought he’d be huge, but he grew up to be much smaller than anyone expected. We asked our vet do a DNA test to check for health issues and she did a breed one as well and turns out he also has some bull terrier in his lineage so it kept him smaller than expected.

Can we also ban inbreeding of dogs? The French Bulldog and the Pug are the first two that come to mind as prime examples.

204

u/bmobitch 12d ago

they’re not inbred anymore. i mean, they absolutely are, bc that’s how they were made, but they don’t mate relatives to continue the breed. the fucked up parts of them are basically the point. it’s the breed standard. apparently people like the faces of dogs so smushed they can barely breathe.

134

u/Snoo_63187 12d ago

My aunt and uncle have a French Bulldog. When my Golden Retriever plays with it the little guy can only run around for 5 minutes before it falls over and almost passed out from lack of oxygen. I'll admit Goldens have become cancer magnets over the years most likely from irresponsible breeding but at least they can still act like a healthy dog up till the big C gets them.

42

u/wildcat2015 12d ago

Seriously, my friend and his fiancée got one and it's just sad, the thing is so loud when trying to breathe, always sounds like it's choking on itself

21

u/itchy_bitchy_spider 11d ago

My ex was a veterinary technician and she told me that they didn't have to sedate French bulldogs when putting tubes down their throat because they calmed down purely from being able to breathe properly for the first time ever

108

u/bmobitch 12d ago

yeah, cancer sucks but at least they’re not suffering every second of every day their whole lives as their standard existence. i work at a vet and we have pugs that quite literally will turn blue from the stress if they’re there for more than maybe 30 minutes. there are 2 pug siblings that are not allowed to come later than 2 hours before close in case we literally need to give them oxygen and fluids and things because they get so messed up when they come.

49

u/Snoo_63187 12d ago

At what point does it become animal abuse?

91

u/Strike_Thanatos 12d ago

There are some breeders who are working to reintroduce the original Frenchie snout to a larger population of Frenchies. I'd say that breeding them outside of that project is irresponsible nowadays.

9

u/whatcenturyisit 11d ago

I saw a French bulldog (or pug, I don't know dog breeds much) with a normal snouts last year for the first time and was so surprised at how foot it looked ! At the beginning I was even confuse like "something isn't quite usual about that dog". Nope he was actually able to breathe and that was good.

36

u/Odd_Suggestion_5897 11d ago

The gene pool of most KC approved dogs is so small that effectively they are all inbred, regardless of how related they are. The Kennel Club and their ‘standards’ are responsible for disgusting, premeditated and preventable cruelty

23

u/bmobitch 11d ago

yeah i mean like i said, breeds as a whole were made by inbreeding so they’re literally inbred, but most are not continuing to inbreed.

edit: and agreed about the kennel club. low german shepherd backs, brachycephalic snouts, ear cropping and tail docking, excessive amounts of skin that cause infections and discomfort….it’s all disgusting

4

u/Odd_Suggestion_5897 11d ago

Ah, I missed that second sentence on your post, I get so pissed off on this subject, my apologies!

7

u/bmobitch 11d ago

no worries! if there was ever something to be pissed off about it’s forcibly (since a lot of these breeds can’t mate or give natural birth) reproducing animals that suffer for our own visual preferences…

8

u/Odd_Suggestion_5897 11d ago

I don’t even understand the visual appeal- to me, beautiful is healthy and by and large, wolf-ish shaped. I ran 4 miles with my 14 and a half year old collie this morning. He used to run much further with my husband, but now he tires me out, and if I missed a Saturday run he’d be gutted. That’s one happy dog, the deliberate breeding of dogs for a life of suffering and inactivity is so messed up. And they would call themselves dog lovers.

I never understood the love of smooshed face dogs. I don’t think they’re cute and honestly just feel sorry for them.

22

u/bmobitch 11d ago

i don’t think they’re cute either. especially once you hear them, kinda ruins any visual cuteness. the congestion and snoring and wheezing and struggling to breathe…. lots of them dripping constantly saliva from their severe underbites not even allowing their jaws to close all the way.

even if i found them cute, i would never buy one. i don’t need to support cruelty. but i would never buy a dog in general

u/Aetra 11d ago

Yeah, my old coworker has French bulldogs and when she’d show me videos of them it just made me sad because all I could think was “How is this cute? They can’t even breathe

The breed in the picture are almost as inbred as the average pug. When tested against other dogs for one research project, the Doberman was the single most inbred breed.

5

u/anonbcmymainisold 11d ago

I took my pup to the vet for routine vaccination and a mild yeast infection in the ear, and someone brought in a maybe 6 month old pug. The poor thing was wheezing and snoring and using accessory muscles to breathe, and other pet owners were laughing and Aww’ing at it. I wanted to cry.

It’s not fucking cute, it’s horrifying

Tail docking has been mostly illegal for about 10 years too, though it's still allowed in special circumstances it is not done routinely anymore.

Wow I had no idea, thanks for sharing. I assumed tail and ear cropping were equally bad

95

u/DanceWorth2554 12d ago

I always used to, until I met someone with two retired and happy greyhounds. The poor things had bandages around their tails so much because they’d wallop them on shit while wagging. The house would look like a crime scene and these gorgeous goofballs would still be wagging - docking was the kinder thing in the end!

Yeah a lot of larger breeds like pits labs mastiffs and so forth have no pain receptors in their tails but a lot of blood vessels so tail breaks are very common and can be dangerous

41

u/ResoluteClover 12d ago

We had a mastiff for a while. She was so happy there was a trail of blood at about 2.5 feet around the apartment.

I would say tail cropping should be done if medically necessary at recommendation by a vet, but not done by breeders to puppies.

Happy tail syndrome is absolutely a thing and some dogs need it, but there aren't a lot of breeds where all dogs have that exact issue. Some dogs do, some don't. And when it becomes a problem, like in your example, cropping it can really help.

Dogs use their tail for body language though, so if you have a dog who doesn't injure their tail (this is the majority) you should leave it on.

I say this as an owner of a VERY enthusiastic labrador who loves to do tippy taps and other displays of pure joy, who hasn't injured his tail ever. I grew up with labradors and same thing. Even though retrievers are like, prime candidates for happy tail syndrome.

94

u/SuperRette 12d ago

Cropping the tail should still only be performed when it's been proven to be necessary. Doing so as a "preventative" measure is simply justifying a practice that might be needed, and gives an excuse to people who will do so simply for aesthetic reasons, while arguing disingenuously they did it for their dog's health.

48

u/Column_A_Column_B 12d ago edited 11d ago

Is this a perception issue?

If cropping the tail preventatively is usually beneficial for the breed why do we care if it's done for aesthetic reasons?

edit: The assumption I made that this could be considered usually beneficial in some breeds cases seems incorrect. So I would like to retract my suggestion that it's a perception issue.

36

u/darthvadercake 11d ago edited 11d ago

It's not always beneficial.

Dogs use their tail for body language, they don't communicate as well without the tail fully intact. Tails breaking or getting injured is definitely a thing, I believe it's called happy tail syndrome, but it's not a universal thing that happens across all dogs of that breed. Dogs across several different breeds can be afflicted and many dogs in those same breeds won't get those issues ever.

It's fine to take steps to fix an issue once it's diagnosed, but having a dog undergo a process that requires them to undergo surgery, heal, and then be somewhat limited in body language, shouldn't be done unless you know if it's even an issue for that dog.

Edit to clarify: that last sentence means it's fine to do surgery once your dog has been diagnosed with the issue - it's not if your dog doesn't have happy tail syndrome.

It is illegal where i live in canada, and you wont find a vet who will do it. But unfortunately people still have cut dogs from elsewhere. And worse, they still dominate the dog show circuit, which pisses me off. Look at how regal the good boi in OP's pic is!

I had an all natural dobie growing up, but she got so excited when our parents got home that she’d open up her tail on the wall and spray blood everywhere everyday. We finally had it docked when she actually broke it. Sometimes tail docking serves a purpose, but that bs with the ears is just whack.

Having grown up around these in the 90's with crops and docks seeing them with floppy ears and tails always seems kind of goofy looking. Not in a bad way or anything. They seem like they're about to tell you a stupid knock knock joke.

148

u/Squrton_Cummings 12d ago

I love Dobies and hate ear cropping but I can't deny they are totally goofy looking with natural ears. It just exaggerates how undersized their heads are compared to their bodies. Super deep chest and then this ridiculous tiny beagle head on top. I used to have a Dobie-Rotti mix and the big ol' Rotti blockhead genes evened it out and she had perfect proportions.

24

u/azizen 12d ago

Oh you don't have any pictures? I'm super curious about that mix!

Don't have any pics handy, that was over 20 years ago. She was a red doberman/rotti mix so she looked like this but with a head that was bigger and less pointy (and no cropped ears). And she had one blue eye. Very pretty girl.

Ear cropping does wonders to make them go from looking derpy to looking like the devil's dog. I love the way it looks, but I can't agree with ear cropping and wish it was phased out completely.

Sounds like they like justifying things to themselves in order to make money.

Though I can get on board with tail docking in some very limited situations. My friend had a lab mix who had a very long, skinny tail with no fat at all... He'd wag his tail so hard he'd actually break it when it hit things. After the second time they came home to their entire house covered wall to wall in blood spatters because he hit the corner of a wall with his waggy tail and then continued to wag it while bleeding profusely, they went to find a vet to dock the tail. He had a very waggy nub after that and spent so much less time in cones or with bandages bugging him.

But just doing it for cosmetic reasons? Gross. I just don't get it.

My first dog I got as an adult was a Rottweiler and I refused to dock his tail. Surprisingly turned a lot of heads and got a lot of questions, more than I would’ve imagined.

Mutilating a dog in the name of aesthetics is fucked and should be illegal

104

u/Kristyyyyyyy 11d ago

It’s weird; I’m Australian, and this is just… what a Doberman looks like.

I think I remember seeing a couple that had been docked, probably back in the 80s, but now they all look like this. I saw this photo and thought “this is a pretty boring post, that’s just a dog” and then I remembered that some places still allow them to be mutilated.

23

u/InadmissibleHug 11d ago

Yeah, exactly. It’s been illegal to crop or dock here for decades.

All these comments about the necessity of it just seem weird to me. Our dogs manage just fine with their natural ears and tails.

No cat declawing either!

I've had three Dobies and never cropped their ears, its cosmetic and absolutely unnecessarily cruel. Tails are usually docked before weaning, and in all honesty it's much more a preventative move than not - Dobie tails are very vulnerable and easily injured just by dogs being dogs. Based only anecdotally on my experience with the breed, I would not support tail docking if the inevitability of serious injury wasn't the case.

People that dock and pin will tell you why it’s “necessary”. They brainwash themselves to prioritize aesthetic over the suffering the animal endures while they are subjected to the cruelty for the owners sake.

37

u/ctaylor0128 12d ago

That is something that should be illegal. Cropping ears and docking tails. All to make the dog look “cool”. The owners should be punished. I love seeing this pic

u/LimeLimpet 12d ago

Mom GRABS kids away

Bear didn't freak out, just looked sad af
